The International Conference "Public Administration Challenges in European Countries - Administration and New Technologies" is part of a series of scientific events "Digital techniques and modern technologies – human orientation" organised on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Faculty of Administration and Social Sciences at the Warsaw University of Technology.

The ambitious project to digitise the economy, which has been underway for a decade in the European Union, is not without impact on the functioning of public administration. Digital services are increasingly becoming not only the main, but also the only way for citizens to interact with public authorities. This direction of change was only reinforced during the pandemic period, when overnight a significant part of the functioning of public administration had to be largely transferred to cyberspace. Nowadays, public administration is affected by a networked, catalysed environment. Public institutions use technological solutions, oversee technologicalisation processes in the market and face the challenges of administration in the world of the digital economy and digital society.

With the maturity of digital public services and the presence of new technologies in various spheres of private life, citizens' expectations of high accessibility, interoperability and cyber security have changed. Today's e-government is not only about the possibility of two-way electronic communication, using predefined workflows that facilitate the handling of even complex matters and help avoid common mistakes. It is also about e-identity services and the widespread use of trust services. Finally, it is the digitalisation of processes, completely eliminating the need for manual case handling and therefore offering the possibility of implementing a 24/7 office - thus always available to the citizen.

From the perspective of the digital transformation taking place, it is also no less important to counteract digital exclusion - which, even in developed European societies, is a significant barrier limiting the adoption of new technologies for the implementation of public tasks or changes in the management of public finance sector entities such as cultural institutions, public universities or health care institutions.

During the next edition of the conference 'Public Administration Challenges in European Countries', we will tackle this issue, discussing not only current problems related to the digitalisation of public administration, but also considering the potential of disruptive technologies in the wider administration.
